Testing the Benq 1650 and more

I have been a little bumfuzzled trying to figure out this drive, certain disks
rip slow, other fast. All good drives slow down with problem areas reading and burning. Part of the error correction and power calibration mechanisms.
During the breakin period this benq has been learning to burn media, that's
to be expected, but it's also learning to read media. The first disk it ever saw, was a burned one and I did a transfer test as I intended to use the drive as a reader and scanner primarily. That first graph showed 2 deep V's
    in the first gig.
To get a handle on this I searched for an old burn on iffy media. A three year old princo should qualify, btw the new cdspeed 4.5 is a heck of a tool.

here's how the nec 3550 sees it quality wise

now a transfer/read graph from the nec

Very interesting test results Chewy, thanks. I have the NEC 3550 1Y6 and an LG.
I have never owned or tried a BenQ but the more I read your threads about them, the more I am tempted to get one!

the LG 4163B is the best reader I have ever tested,
the nec 3550 is the fastest ripper and good with new disks!
they make a good pair, complimenting each others weaknesses
                  Both are excellent burners

Yeah, I really like the NEC 3550. My LG is a bit older and not as good as the 4163B. That's a good reason to go by another new burner to play with!

the king of Benqdom suggested I repeat the read test and set max speed at 12x for the benq 1650, I also set it for the nec 3550

Does the BenQ scan that much better then the NEC?

Could it possilby make a potential "bad area" of the disc appear to be a good scan?

Just curious of the different scan results, especially on the Disc Quality, one being a 0, the other a 90.

NEC drives are not completely reliable to do scans. Benq are good scanners. Liteon are better, and plextor are the best (but are also really costly )

Does that mean my NEC may scan a disc quality of 95, when in fact there are suspect areas on that disc?

I use my NEC 3550 for all my CD SPEED scans and I trust the quality of the disc based on the results I get. I have noticed that good media produces much better results then poor media. But, I want my scans to be accurate.
