You got it. I guess i'll use my NEC for the scans.
I was using the external HD via usb and the LG firewire yestrday. Everything worked great.
Kids screaming got to go. Is that smile on your face?

      Good Morning Chewy
Any dancing last night? I became a musician so I wouldn't have to dance.

I need to flash the following drive. I have some burning speed issues with the Lg (disks will only play on freestanding players if I only burn at 4x) and the NEC is just old. Here are the following version info.

      1) Sun Oct 06, 2002 4:00 pm LG/HLDS/Goldstar CED-8080B
      LG CED-8080B 1.01, 1.06 / 1.07 Only for drives in DELL computers / 1.08 OEM

      2) Sun Oct 06, 2002 4:00 pm NEC DV-5700A
      -NEC DV-5700A (12X/40X) 1.06 / 1.92 / 3.43-this one wouldn't open page
      (Known firmware : 1.05 - 1.06 / 1.30 / 1.50 / 1.91 / 3.42 - 3.43)
1.06 fix a failure to play back multisession audio CD's beyond the first session
Patched region free firmware 1.06v3a, 1.30Cv3a, 1.30Av3a, 1.43v3a, 1.51V3a, 1.91Av3a, 1.91Cv3a, 3.07v3a and 3.43v3a are available for the drive. They are not RPC-1 but these patch updates NEC DVD-ROM Firmware to eliminate the decrement of the DVD region code change counter. After this patch you can change DVD region code on your DVD-ROM as many times as you wish - counter will be always 4. Before flashing, read the NEC DVD FAQ v6.0a. A must read. Patch by ASID.

I have already downloaded the bold highlighted ones. TheLG prompted me to make a diskette. I have done so, but not sure how to load. I did find a "read me text" file.
The NEC promps a DOS window and Run F10 or Abort . This seems easy. Is that all there is to the NEC?
      Thanks
      CJ

          Chewy,
          I get it!
The only thing is, i'm in negotiations with my wife to get a new computer. I had installed a firewire card, 512 ram, ethernet net card, usb 2.0 card in my 98se to keep it going.
My 98se is fast but.... and I know this is a great deal $ and it would run on my 98se. UUUUUGGGGG!
Do you think it's worth hanging on to the 98se or push of a newer one?
          Thanks,
          CJ

push for the new one, but you could always gut the 98 one when you get it.
firewire and dvd burner could move over

the PIII 800 would handle easy transcodes, burning and scanning until then

You know... I had thought of it. Life after teaching, in about 5 more years, got to get the 25 years you know, hopefully will be in the area of computers. I wouldn't mind working in a school system because it allows me to be home with my kids after school. Not many dads can do this. I feel very lucky to have chosen this profession.

Anyway, I did see some posts with information on either Do-It-Yourself or having some company build it to your own specs.
I have always wanted to build my own. What would be the rough ball park cost difference be between Dell top of the line and build your own top of the line?
I would like to start reading up on "Do-It-Yourself." Any links would be greatly appreciated.

                  Thanks

Dell just does Pentium/intel and amd64 is the cpu of choice for gamers and video encoders, it's entry level computers that you can't afford to compete
with the big companies. Top of the lines are more similar in price.

                      Chewy,
Just got my new Benq 1650. It didn't come with an installation manual or cables(figured no cables). I went on Benq's site. No manual available there either. Came with a Nero Express disk.
My question is, do I just pull the old burner and use the same cabling? Anything else I should know. This is going in the 98se desktop.
                      Thanks

I'm not going to keep the NEC as a reader? To old? How about just pulling the cable, leaving the drive to keep the front of the stack closed from dust?
                          Sorry about the questions.
"set jumper to master?" please explain.

Installed my Benq-1650 tonight in my 98se. I burned my first disk. I had already backed this disk up on my XP. I used the copy. Read with the NEC. I figured I would try the old drive first. Is the third line anything to worry about? This is the same problem when trying to backup the HD using FAT32. It won't accept more then 4GB at a time.

I'm also not able to create a "VIDEO_TS" folder within the movie title folder. It won't allow me to capitalize "VIDEO_TS" This is going to be a problem when it comes time to use Shrink after a "File" rip with DVDD. How would I fix this?
                                PS. Thanks Chewy
