Sony Firmware Questions

I purchased a Sony DRX-710 UL external burner.

As I do not know much about this whole firmware scene, I have 3 questions:

1. When I upgraded my firmware to BYX5, my computer now tells me that the burner is now named DRU-710A.
What caused this change of names?? Is that good or bad?

2. Do folks consider this to be a good or bad burner. (It has worked well for me, for about a year now.)

3. I'd like to know more about this whole firmware subject. I keep coming across words like flashing and crossflashing. Could someone kindly point me to a link whare I can read up on this. Something like "Firmware for dummies"

shouldn't be an issue, just better media support and burning

not one of the better burners but not bad one either

The important part for this burner is it's not a sony but a liteon

and the latest liteon firmware is a little newer

And I'm not all that sure LiteOn is in the top tier of burners.

LG, NEC, Benq seem to claim top prizes.

they are considered some of the best scanner/readers just can't burn good
unless you count the fact they burn cmc mags as good as verbatim and TY's
which seems impossible

I actually considered buying one just for scanning cos I wouldnt use it to burn with
