Does this mean I have to buy a new DVD burner? [Different errors while burning]

Hi. I own a Toshiba Satellite M35. It comes with a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-820S writer. My software of choice is Nero Burning ROM 6.6.18. I used to have absolutely no problem with burning on pretty much any brand of media. However, lately, I've repeatedly gotten errors on brands I used to have no problem with.

Sometimes, the drive cannot read DVDs that I've burned with it. It says there's an unspecified I/O device error. This is irritating enough, but I can live with that.

However, the last 7 DVDs I've tried to burn have all failed to be completed. I get the range of errors from "illegal disc error" to "unspecified target error" to " "could not perform end of disc-at-once" to "power calibration error".

I do use the drive a lot, and have burned hundreds and hundreds of DVDs and CDs on it.

Is it just dying due to overuse? Do I have no recourse but to purchase an external burner for my laptop? I'd appreciate any input from someone more knowledgeable than I.

    Thank you very much!

well given the amount of burns you have done, it could be possible the drive is trying to say goodbye. could you post your last burn log?

This is a stupid question, but may I ask where I can check the firmware version? I can't find it in the Driver tab of the Device Manager.

          Burn process failed at 2.4x (3,324 KB/s)

          Existing drivers:

This is a process in which it failed midburn. Prior to this, I'd tried to burn 4 times with different DVDs and every time, I got a power calibration error, which resulted in no writing to the discs at all.

TOSHIBA MK8025GAS atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
I went into the device manager for this, and checking both the Primary and Secondary IDE ports, they're listed as "DMA if applicable." Not sure what to change there. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd be happy to, but... is there any chance you could point me toward a site that would explain how to do that? I unzipped the 1003_PN.zip file, and then double-clicked DrvLoad4Win, and I got a pop-up which said "Wrong Firmware Data file is selected." So I'm guessing it's not as simple as that.

So sorry; I've never done these things before, and I'm a real beginner in this area.
