a good power supply with stable clean power is essential for consistent
quality burns according to some woman named Dee-27 over at cdfreaks.

I would burn good mids at 8x with that burner after the firmware flash.
It wasn't designed for 4x burning.

Inkjet printed discs will smear if any moisture comes in contact with the surface, even after weeks of drying. I have been coating these discs the day after the printing with some type of clear sealant and they look great and are water/smear proof. And yes, they play fine.

Hi Mikey, What's the name of the sealant that you use? I would imagine you would have to be very careful applying it, as not to get any on the burned surface. Do you use a brush? Thanks

I would use a clear acrylic aerosol can and an old teashirt or towel.

Patricia Nimock's sprays from Wal-Mart's fabric & crafts department work great. They spray a MUCH finer mist than hardware type spray, but they're about 2x the price. I think they're worth it because they produce an EXCELLENT durable finish.

I've found a way to scan a silver disc & eliminate most of the rainbow from the background, allowing me to print to a silver and get virtually the same effect as a screened surface. I'll try to come up with a way to explain it, but I can't describe it quickly right now. Gotta get back to work.

              Another Question

Thanks Steve, I think I'll go pick a few cans. I've also seen these transparent covers that slip right over the disc. Their meant to be put over the burned side to prevent scratches, I wonder if they can be put on the printed side and still play fine. I seen these at Staples and I sure they can be found elsewhere.

The only reason I use direct-printable disks is to avoid sticking something onto them. That would defeat the purpose, and probably just make the disk unreadable (out-of-balance) until you peeled it off, removing most of the printing.

                The spray works great.

To Steve83 I bought a couple cans and sprayed, works great thanks for the tip! To d00by I recently got a EpsonRX700. It's an all in one, does photos, copies, scans and prints directly on to the disc. Epson running a $100 rebate right now. So now I can scan & print, don't have go looking on the web for the pic.

Sorry for my ignorance, but you guys are talking about printing right on the DVD correct? I currently use labels and wonder if they make the player go off balance or something. Is there an inexpensive model that would do the job?

The Epson 220 was about $100.00. It is the ink that is going to kill you.

Wow! Thanks for the link. I'm thinkin only using it for dvd backups wouldn't go through that much ink. Glad I stumbled across a new thing for me to try!

I do not use but DRF does. Maybe someone who does can pipe in. All I know it takes six print cartridges @ $12 to $18 apiece. See link here.

Yeah it's about $60 bucks for a full set of 6 ink cartridges if you go with Epsns own ink. I personally have printed up to 250-300 discs with one set of cartridges. All depends on how much ink will be used on your discs. Different covers has more lighter colors and white in them. Those that are dark covers, I just reduce the ink setting to -1 or even -2 and that will reduce the amount of ink used. They still look great with the lower ink settings.

So about .40 cents for the discs and around .20 cents for the ink = .60 cents for a professional looking back-up! Can't go wrong with that price, huh?
