Best way to clean the lens

    Hi all,

A couple elementary questions here, but someone has to ask them...

Was thinking about cleaning the lens in my burner; How often is this necessary? Is the lens cleaning kits w/ the brush embedded in the disc the best way to go?

    Thanks, katz

a follow up question; is it "safe" to burn disc after disc w/o giving the burner a "rest?"

Was wondering about the "overheating" issue, 'cause that's what I usually do, & I didn't want to prematurely wear out my new Benq!

chewy or another member who is a dvd burning "geek" (no offense fellas, but you damn-well know some of you are) may have a proper answer to that question, i can say though with my lite-on 1213s i do what i like to call "batch burning" and burn many projects in a row. usually between 8 and 15 non-stop. i do this every 2-3 weeks. this drive is a-ok after 2 years still and hundreds and hundreds of burns.

common sense would dictate cooling is best though i suppose, since electronics are filled with diodes, transistors and other semi-conductors and components, all of which hate heat.

yea, don't I know it! that's why I wondering if other users had been "abusing" their burners, & what their results have been.

I saw where chew & some others had posted on the forums that a burner may only be good for 500-600 burns. Seems a shame to throw it out if it will still power up & spin... lol

Good idea! I have had that thought for awhile, & I think it is time to get a 2nd drive...

Now, do I want to buy another Benq, or go with the NEC that I have been hearing so much about?!?!

Chewy Nec is very good but I do not see many other member here have one that good, benq seem more consistence, benq only love good medias, 55 retail is my choice but I read in other forum is just luck of the draw that one is better then another ( I mean retail and EOM)

Heat is a small issue, but you have to figure if your burner is in a bad position,
if there's a drive right below it and above it, it's gonna get hotter after consecutive burns, if the case is hot, makes the problem worse, but when they die who's to really tell from what.
My old nec 3520 passed down to my son started making bad burns after
several hundred disks, who counts? I disassembled, the lens didn't look dirty,
the rails had some grime on them, I cleaned and relubricated, it still makes bad disks.
I know it ripped or burned way over 500 cd's(all types) and dvd's. That's less than 10 cents a disk. Use em up, the replacement will be better and at least as cheap.
My benq 1620 got babied till the 1650 hit the states. I baby my 1650(a good one), and use an older nec 3540 to burn in that computer. Be nice if it would hurry up and die.
                  LT.

no offense, I take it as a compliment.

the nec 3550 is the perfect compliment to the benq 1650/5

baby that benq, only burn the "critical" stuff with it, I'd retire something else and get the nec 3550.

that's a good idea, because the benq 1650/5 may be discontinued and it's replacement made with a different chipset that doesn't scan. I would buy one, make sure that it works, even burn and scan my best disks, just hooked
temporarily outside the case, then put away for safe keeping, should be good for a year or two wrapped in plastic. Save the scans and the disks, mark and rescan when you get it back out.
