NEC 3550 doesn't like 12X?

Is it just me, but doesn't the NEC 3550 like to burn at 12X? I get full speed requested when I try to burn at 8X or 16X but it only wants to burn at 4X when I select 12X.

This happened with the original firmware and the 1Y6 on Verbs or Sony TYs? any info?

With my NEC, I have to insert the disc first (even in Nero) then select the speed. This way, the firmware will offer me the speeds that the firmware will write that brand of DVD at. Otherwise, I only get Nero defaults speeds.

Good point Gary D! Yep, it has to check the MID to see at what speeds it is supported in the firmware. But if it is showing 12X to pick from it hadda be in.

the 355x-455x nec drives have some nasty spikes that show in scans
of 12x burn speed for certain premium medias, I stay with 8x.

I always insert my blank media and it calls up the burning programs and then I choose from there. So the blank medias' speed ratings are already detected. I wouldn't be able to check 12X or 8X otherwise.

I might have to do like Night is saying and just let the NEC rip. I am just temporarily trying out the NEC anyways. It was extremely cheap from Newegg, so I got it as an extra DVD-RW (also got a Q 1650 that I put in another PC, it's great!). I am going to go back to my Sony DRU-810 to compliment my BenQ 1655, that has been a great combo for me.
The Sony(rebagded BenQ 1640) rips in blazing time and burns pretty well also. And the BenQ 1655 rips decently and burns great.

Looks like the NEC will become 'second-string' and will sit on the 'bench' until needed.

Your science has one flaw, the testing engine, that burn software is old.
Make an iso with shrink use cdspeed to burn at 12x, scan with the benq 1650.
Post results in blank media and burning.
Imgburn and nero give good support for that nec drive, don't they have an update for that old burn engine you are using?

It's the latest of the VSO CopyToDVD that I know of.

But will try and see if Nero will have different results. I don't have any ISOs on my PC right now, but maybe will make one just for testing.

Both the BenQs' and the Sony, as well as the HP 740 has no issues with the burn engine.

I googled the burn engine it's old, same one used by lots of companies.
I bet dvdd which is even older wouldn't have that problem.

BTW, CopyToDVD, IMO, is a clean/stable burning program which has given me great resulting discs. I'll stick with it as my main burning engine. Thanks for the great info though.

about a year ago I embarked upon a quest to have a burner, media, burn engine shoot out, the burn engine test fizzled, my inital tests for speed and quality yielded no difference between nero and imgburn, that's what happens when you don't really understand the mechanisms.

I have gotten some quirky results from my nec 3540 and 3550 with lowering read speed in dvdd, that may be related to your problem.
