How Bad Can A Burn Get? How About 3.7 MILLION PIFs?

Bought some Memorex -R disks the other day. They are 16X and there's a warning that a burner needs updated firmware. According to the Sony support page I have the most recent version for my Sony DRU710a. I burn at 4X.

Sometimes the disks are not recognized on the first try. What's really bizarre is that about every other burn turns out like the attatched graph while the other burns are just fine. There's no obvious defects in the disk's coating to explain it... yet if it were a firmware issue, would not ALL burns be bad?

Any ideas anyone?

I have made some 700 burns and never hit a batch like this. Usually if PIFs get in the range of about 10 you can see some defects in the dye... either there was a speck of dust or uneven dye coating near the edges. But these PIFs are off the scale yet there's not visible problem with the dye. So just where do you think the inconsistentcy lies?
