Why is it that when you use dvd shrink to shrink a dvd and then burn using nero it takes about 40 mins for me. When i burn a second copy and just go into nero and add the dvd files and burn it only takes half the time or about 20 mins?

First time around you are encoding as well as burning. The second time 'round you are only burning.
encode 10-30 minutes This time depends on CPU processing power and amount of compression used.
burn 10-15 minutes This time depends on the speed at which you are burning.

OK Here's another one:
Why can I use 20 or more characters in my DVD label in Shrink (which burns with Nero), but Nero itself will only allow me 16 characters??? I figure its related to Joliet-compliant filenames, but how does Shrink get around it?Comment

Well, it's really related to ISO9660 and UDF - Joliet has nothing to do with it.
Note - the player only needs to read (and can only read) UDF but all commercial DVDs contain both ISO9660 and UDF 1.02 filesystems.
The ISO9660 (level 1) limits the file names to 11 characters in 8.3 format (the old dos naming). Level 2 limits them to 32. As you are aware, all DVD filenames are 8.3, conforming to the level 1 spec. In both cases, the filenames must be upper case. ISO9660 labels can be 32 characters, all uppercase, no spaces.
Joliet labels can be 16 characters only - upper and lower case, with spaces - but as I said before, this filesystem is irrelevant on a DVD-VIDEO.
UDF can actually handle labels of 126 characters (upper and lower case with spaces).
Ner0, is unfortunately wrong. It should limit it to 32 chars for ISO9660. Or maybe you have Joliet checked, in which case it is probably using the "lowest common denominator".
