Nero 6.6.1.4 Dual Layer DVD Burning Question

Hello this is my first post here and I have a question about how to burn a Dual Layer DVD+R with Nero OEM version 6.6.1.4. I have a Lite-On DVD-RW drive with dual layer write capability it's product model number is: SHM-165H6S04C if you made need to know it.

My problem I am having is that eveytime I try to make a DVD video with Nero and the project size is over DVD-5 capacity it tells me I need a Dual Layer DVD disc to burn the project onto. I have 2 types of Dual Layer discs that I am trying to use which are:Verbatim DVD+R DL discs, and HP DVD+R DL discs. When I put either one of the two types of Dual Layer discs into the dvd-rw drive Nero never recognise's it and keeps telling me that I need a DVD-9 disc to burn the project. I was wondering if maybe there was a way to maybe to change a setting or something in Nero to make it recognise the Dual Layer disc.

First, is your firmware up to date?

Second, stick to the Verbatims.

Third, you might consider ImgBurn, whihc is an infintely better solution than Ner0 (and free).

Fourth, read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning.

I've made sure that the firmware is up to date for my Nero and the reason I wanted to stay with Nero is because of the features of creating menus and customising everything myself. The video I am trying to get onto the disk is not a DVD backup of a movie it is a video file I had gotten from the internet.

The size of the file is 700mb and when I bring it into Nero I want the quality to be it's best bringing the size to aroung 7gb. So if maybe you or anyone else can help me out I would appreciate any help

Re-encoding to 7Gb is not going to make better quality. You can't fill in the bits where there were none before.

This file (I presume it is an AVI and I hope you have observed rule 6), can simply be burned to a CD and played in Media Player Classic or VLC.

Or to play on a standalone player, convert it to DVD format with Ner0 Vision Express (I am not sure if it does that and if so, how good a job), and burn to a DVD-5. But don't expect one iota of an increase in quality.

First of all the video I am trying to burn is not pirated material, and the quality difference between the extended play, long play, and high quality setting choices that I can choose from in Nero are noticeable when I watch the discs that I have made using each of the quality settings on different videos. The only thing I am trying to figure out at this point is just how to get Nero to burn a dual layer dvd for me.

If the source video is about 90 minutes long(700MB?), high quality will almost fill a dl disk, but have you tried custom and setting it to a high enough bitrate to fill a single layer disk, and using 2 pass?

Out put to you hard drive and check on computer for quality, or then you can even burn with ImgBurn, a better dual layer solution if you have to have dual layer.

BTW firmware is for your dvd burner, not nero, what is your burner and what version of vision are you using?

My burner is a Lite-On DVD - + RW with Dual Layer capability. The model number is SHM-165H6S04C. I just downloaded the updated firmware for it and I dont think that helped but atleast its up to date now

My nero is the OEM version that came with my burner and I just updated that too to version 6.6.1.4.

what version of vision are you using

I am using NeroVision Express 3(3.1.0.21), seperate update

are you doing the conversion process as a 2 step, first to the hard drive and then trying to burn?

yeah i'm almost done trancoding the video with vision express (my version is 3.1.0.25) and am going to try and burn the video when it's done with imgburn using a dual layer disc.

ImgBurn does a much better job, pay careful attention to the layer break,
that's where nero drops the ball.

If it's not too much explanation could you tell me what the layer break is? Also will I have to worry about this with imgburn, or will it take care of it on it's own?

Alright now when I am trying to make the disc using imgburn I get an error when i'm trying to calculate the space that the video will take up on the disc saying - "Unable To Find Any Cells That Can Be Used For The Layerbreak!"

Can you help me out with this?
