sony firmware update

Hello everyone;

Using Windows XP.

I just went on the sony site (http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw...JY08Update.htm) and ran the firmware for my Sony DVD RW DRU-720A the last firmware listed was JY07 and I updated to JY08.

Now my computer lists the drive as a CD ROM drive. What went wrong? Everything on the site says for US residents only for support and I am in Canada.

I haven't tried using the Canadian support yet. I thought maybe someone here would know if this is a common problem or what?

Oh no, you flashed a Canadian burner with Yank firmware? Not to worry,
I took my Benq(made in China) dvd burner and flashed with firmware from Chinese web site.

Use nero infotool to see drive's capabilities.

if that doesn't work we may need to reflash the firmware

I tried to copy and paste the info tool saved file, but I got a message saying. . .

"The text that you have entered is too long (56303 characters). Please shorten it to 15000 characters long."


Can I send it in pieces, or do you need all of it?

Click on Chewy's InfoTool.txt & you will see that what is needed is the drive information.

when you hit the floppy icon for report, uncheck everything but drive
to attach, go advanced and manage attachments

here's what it tells me. (ya, like I understand it!) Looks like it says it's still a dvd rw, but when I go into control panel--system--hardware--device manager it has the E: drive down as a CD ROM. Who's right (gawd, I hope nero is!)

well don't buy any dvd-r dual layer disks or dvd-ram

should I try reflash it at a different site? Where should I have gone? I have another dvd burner -- a LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1633S last Firmware Version : BS0S.

I was only doing it as I have my system here in town with high speed. Where I live (in northern rural Alberta) there is no high speed available. So I bring my system to town every now and then and use my work's high speed and do my updates (windows updates, norton updates, etc.)

It's been awhile since I did a firmware upgrade so I thought it would be a good thing to do.

Is the Sony toast?

Have you rebooted since doing the flash?

It rebooted itself a few times. It kept telling me that it "found new hardware" and was trying to install it and then it would reboot. I think it did it about 3 or 4 times.

I got busy serving a customer and could hear it rebooting.

If I do, what should I replace it with? What burner(s) are your favorites?

I was finding the Lite-On was giving me problems, what -- I don't remember, as I haven't used it for some time (because it was giving me problems . . .).

if it won't burn try a reflash from safe mode, otherwise you might just remove it from device manager, reboot and let windows redetect, sure you didn't have some sort of software loading with windows that might have glitched the flash or redetection by windows? anydvd, dvd43, daemon tools, etc
any drive emulation software, another issue that will hose a flash is non-standard ide drivers(any special nvidia, intel etc ones)

btw this is why I specify safe mode

Before executing firmware update, uninstall any packet writing software, such as [DLA], [DirectCD], [B's CLiP] etc, from the PC.
If you are using the DRU-720A, disable [DMA setting] in Windows before executing firmware update. For details, refer to [Help and Support] in Windows.

I did , I still have it but when it run sound like the dvd touch something make like grind noise so I put it a side
