I would rule out the media first, then the drive, 2nd drive is good to have (in the box - secondary)

I have three NEC's they are ROCK solid ... and have GREAT firmware hacks.

Look at the Combo Deals as well and see if you can use any of those, I kinda like that Roswell Multi-Card Reader .... but your call

I'm going to get some good media and do one more test.

Is there a test program out there that can be used to test the drive and see if it has a problem?

Also, how do you get rid of InCD? The damn thing loads on startup and I can't even figure out how to shut it down.

make sure you are not running smartstart

a lot of times right clicking on an item next to the clock speaker gives an exit command

I loaded a disc that I burned a few months ago with this drive and it is on the same medai i have been using. I ran Nero Speed, but I don't know what the results mean.
Can you tell me , what is the quality of this previous burn.

One more thing, I tried one one DVD9 burn, this time it went all the way through using DVD cLonerlll, no error report. However when I tried to play the disc, it says, " wrong format" and willnot read. maybe that is another clue

newer drives scan faster, lately I have seen some real scary scans done at 1 and 2x that indicate real bad read errors.

actually the 1693 was one of the first liteon's that started to return consistent scans at 8x, later drives do fine.

                      8X is faster, so better

if 4X looks better use it.

will retry scan at 4x and see what happens.
funny, this disc has no problems in play back.

I also picked up some new media today
                            Sony DVD +RW 4.7GB

tried to burn with Image Burn
this time I get a new error message.
"Synchronise Cache Failed! - Reason: Write Error"

another thing, the log says it tried to burn at 4x but I had selected 2.4x
