so, I finally got Liteonit tech service on the phone. (I'm 95% convince this is a drive problem.)

The guy starts out asking a bunch of questions, he says "well if it will play a movie then the LASER is working." dah!

I told him I tried different media, different software etc, nothing works.
He wanted me to update to the latest version of Nero because that is what they use., and try to burn a disc again. then call back. By time I got that done they were closed, will call back tomorrow.

I burned a copy of an ISO image I have on my HD.
It burned complete with no error message.
But of coarse when i try to play it, I get
"disc with unsupported format in drive"

Also another clue why I think it is the drive.
I Used Nero to try and erase a RW disc, it started
got about 25% done, then gave an error saying, " cannot erase disc"

The tech support guy was saying he thinks it is a software problem. anyone got an idea how I can convince them it is the drive so they will take it back?

        use cd speed

this program is by erik depp, the author of nero tools, use it to make a data
disk and anyalyze the problem, if they know anything they will know about cdspeed, your problem will be to convince them you know something

use another kind of media besides the ritek?

ok, erased the disc with Image Burn
quick erase failed but full erase worked.

tried to make a Date disc with NeroSpeed
First try with Memorex -R failed
            "power calibration area fail"

Tried with t he Sony disc I just erased
            it said, "disc not empty"

tried with a Fugifilm +R DL
            it worked

what am I looking for on the data disk?

            another question
why does a disc I burned several months ago play on my Home theatre
but will not play on the drive that made it or my laptop
i get " dics is wrong format"

well I bought a NEC3550A and tried to burn with the same media I had all the problems with on the Liteon

              burned a Fujifilm +R DL (RITEK-D01-01)

              It burned with no problems.

ran Nero Speeed and got a score of 91

so I guess it was a drive problem

you can't really use an iffy disk like a ritek D01 to draw that conclusion,
if good single layer gives you a problem then the liteon is bad, that drive is
usually a great scanner for errors tho.

well I say that because when i first got the Liteon it burned disks ok.
then I could not get a burn that would play or complete without errors.
I tried 3 different media. I admit they are not the highest qualty media, but they burn ok with the NEC. I live in Hawaii and have not found anyone selling Ty or Verbatium media. When I get my hands on some I may try a disk on the Liteon.

with my experience with light on, burn the lowest speed that allow you, and use older media

I really don't know how to help you I have the same dvd writer lighton and I all of the sudden started getting the same kind of errors you spoke of. I was blissfully going along and then bam. Hope its not the writer that will suck but out of solutions. Let me know if you find the answer. Here is my log by the way
