    Good media for burning.

Hopefully Columbo won't ban me again for asking a question.

I need to know what is some good media to buy for duplicating? I read the link in one of my other posts about media codes, ect and it was too confusing for me.

I'm on ebay and I am searching for bland thermal media but all I see is DVD-R. I have been using verbatim DVD+R. I need to know if there is a big difference between -R and +R and what does it all mean. I was told that most dvd players read only +R. Is this true. And what is the difference between the x4, x8, x16. I always burn at a rate of x4, sometimes x8 if I am rushing. Does this mean that if I buy x4 that I can burn any faster than that or does it have something to do with the playback quality.

Ebay had Yuden DVD-R 100 for $24.99. They are guaranteed to be authentic. I need disks that are totally blank so that I can print on them. Silver top or white is fine.

    Thanks for all your help.

Stay away from Ebay for buying media....stick to the short list.

Verbatim (Made in Japan or Made in Taiwan or Made in Singapore)
    Maxell (Made in Japan only)
    Fuji (Made in Japan only)
    Sony (Made in Japan only)
Taiyo Yuden (only made in Japan)

My personal recommendation would be Verbatims, simply because of the wide availability of the discs in most local areas. They are also on sale often. The rest of the list might be harder to find locally only because you are reduced to looking at the label to find out the country they are manufactured in. Finally the Taiyo Yudens are the cream of the crop and can only be found online, with the exception of some Sony's and Verbatim being made by TY. Here is a list of some online media vendors:

As for the difference in media...see here.

I prefer to use DVD+Rs since they can be burned as DVD-ROMs. This is called bitsetting. Since switching from DVD-Rs, IMHO I believe this is the only way to burn an DVD. To read more about bitsetting, read about it here.

About DVD media, use locoeng's list and cross reference your burner at this site: videohelp. Select your burner (under DVD writer) and read the most recent posts about the media burns with different media.

PS: About Ebay, buyer beware!!!!!! There are fake Taiyo Yudens out there! Buy online from a reputable dealer! Pay a little extra for genuine TYs.

I've used about 200 of the Maxell Hitachi High grade, personally I think the Verbatims are better...just got my first 100 TY's I'll see how they stack up against my 500+ burns with Verbatim.
