I'm what you would call a newbie at this sort of thing, so could you explain what you just said in "dummy mode" please?

Well, first you should read what I linked to.
Update you firmware from the link - this is a must.
When burning, turn everything else off. Mail, internet, utilities, etc. You need more memory.
DL ImgBurn and use it to burn your files. There are guides on the ImgBurn site, but essentially you go to build mode, select the folder containing your nerw NTSC files. And press the button to create an ISO. Then burn it. Very simple.
