Why Do I Get A (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST) Error Message?

I have been burning DVDs successfully with DVD Shrink and Nero for a little while now. Recently my attempts to burn are failing, even though the DVDs I'm using are the same as they've always been.

This is an example of an error log I receive:

If you could provide advice on likely resolution I'd be thankful. Apologies if this question has been asked before.

Read and implement the Golden Rules of Burning.

In particular, get that DMA on, and ensure firmware is up to date.

I had one of those burners and the 1.0C version of firmware was much better than the one you have installed now.

My burner is an old but reliable NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A with firmware version 1.0C and hasn't had a burn problem at all for year so far

Thank you blutach and cynthia for your advice. I have updated my firmware to the 1.0C version but this hasn't solved my problem unfortunately. I have tried to follow blutach's advice about DMA. My primary channel now shows:

          Ultra DMA Mode 5

But my secondary channel only shows:

          PIO Mode.

I have uninstalled these drives and rebooted, but to no effect. Do you have any further suggestions or is it time to get a new DVD drive?

try uninstalling the secondary ide channel and rebooting

make sure you can't change the pio to dma first
