I looked at both threads, but I didn't see a full guide. So I just dl'ed & extracted 4.60, stuck in one of the burned disks, & started the quality scan. These are from 2 disks, but I let both of them get a little scuffed after they were burned during handling, printing, & sealing. I'm burning another in the NEC now & I'll make sure to scan it immediately.
that second scan is much better, however, those PIF spikes at the end are still nasty. keep in mind, though, that NEC and Pioneer drives are known to be VERY inaccurate scanners. i wouldn't trust a scan from either of those drives...
i've said this before, but you guys have to realize that disc quality scanning means very little; it does not show you how long the disc will last as there are many other factors. Taiyo Yuden DVD-/+R's generally have the best initial scans out of ANY media, but that does NOT mean that they will last the longest. while Maxell Made in Japan (MXL RG0x DVD-R, or MAXELL 00x DVD+R) generally has mediocre scans (with exception to some of their professional grade media, like their Plus Series, or Broadcast Quality DVD-R's), in professionaly done longevity tests (check Dolphinius Rex's longevity test at CDRLabs.com) Maxell MIJ does VERY well despite it's mediocre burn quality. to add to that, Maxell MIJ media has VERY good media compatibility with drives/dvd players and also has very high success rate.
No, a few months ago, I started slowing all my burns down to 4x. I used to let them all run at max.
What would be a good test for the NEC's scanning? A good clean factory-pressed DVD? Should it be single or double layered? I think I have some that are nearly virgin, but how badly can it be scratched/scuffed/smudged & NOT interfere with the scanning?
when my nec 3550 was brand spanking new and I had some premium
TY 8x dvd+ and - R media I burned some disks at 8X, I then compared a benq scan and a nec scan of one of the better disks, the pif spikes and totals were so close as to be almost the same, I concluded for high quality burns it was a good scanner, the pie is exaggerated.
you have to compare scans done at 4x, 8x and 12x to find the best scan speed. whichever scan is best go with that scan speed
I often found 4x burn speed to inferior to 8x with the nec and good media
well they probably aren't made in japan, there was some discussion a few months back about that relabeling. how does your burner do with the verbatim blanks? Might be a weak power supply? Have you scanned a better disk at 4x and/or 12x. You can ignore those rogue spikes and 0 scores unless a transfer rate test shows a problem in the same area.
4x isn't an option, but here are 3 scans of the SAME disk without even removing it from the NEC. It was burned yesterday in the Pioneer. Looks like the problem is the 8x scanning.

Reason: forgot the @#$& pic
good detective work, that's why nec 3550 is not as good a scanner as a benq, the problem is some are OK, some only at weird scan speeds, others not at any speed.
actually your drive is ok at 12x(good and fast scanning)
