is there any software that will allow me to check a dvd for flaws/bad sectors, etc., before i burn to it and then it won't verify or allow me to copy data from it?

If it's a DVD-R, you can use Test Mode of ImgBurn. Don't forget to turn it off when you wanna do a real burn.
Won't work for +Rs

thanks for the info. so far i have only been using -r.
the good burn but bad results issue finally came to a head when i had a catastrophic drive failure and was restoring from dvd backup discs only to find out that 1 of them (even though i could see the files, i couldn't copy them) was a total loss. not even isobuster could get the data back. i had just copied the data to the discs, visually verified that the data was there and put them away. my bad for not letting nero verify them also. live and learn.
burning video to dvd and it not verifying is a pain, but not the heartbreaker losing almost 4gb of data was.Comment
