    Cross Flashing?

I've seen in a few threads where cross flashing is mentioned. Just what the heck is cross flashing and what does it do?

I have 2 Lite-on Drives SOHW 832s - VSOM and a new SHM 165H6S - HSOE both have the latest firmware loaded.

it's takes a while to figure it out, but a drive is made then marketed under different names with different firmwares, since the drive is basically the same,
a firmware and procedure can be used to change one drive into another.

your 832 is the end of the developement of 2nd generations liteon so no crossflash, but the modded improved firmware might be worth updating with?

@ Chewy - I think I screwed up! I went to the link you provided and as my firmware was already VS0M I downloaded the CG5J firmware and now my drive went from a Lite-On 832s - VS0M to Sony_DVD_RW_DRU-700A - CG5J.

      What do I do?

My dvd name changed when i updated some sony firmware.
It did not hurt the drive, so you may be ok.
Have you checked the drive to see how it works.
Chewy is the expert on this stuff, so id go by whatever he tells you.

the CJ58 is the one for the Sony, but they are probably the same firmware
            832S.CG5J.patched-cf-sonyid.exe
you may have run this one

            832S.CG5J.patched-cf.exe should have been used

reflash in safe mode, but new firmware will not fix a wornout drive, I wish

ok I went back to VS0M and tried the test again using "The Sentinel" and "Lucky # Slevin" both burned on verbatium disc - same results with sector errors. So I tried an old dvd "Coach Carter" burned on Imation disc - no erros and everything looked good.
Then I tried "The Sentinel" and "Lucky # Selvin" on my SHM 165H6 and the test came out fine.

Could it be the 832S does not like Verb's?

This old bald head not hurts!

              Should I try the 832S - CG5J patched?

the 832's weren't that great when new, after enough use I am sure they go down hill.

try cleaning with compressed air or drive cleaner kit if they have gotten dirty,
I would go for the correct codeguys firmware anyway.

@ Chewy as always you're a real Star Wars guy. Thanks so much for all the help. I am going to go back to the CG5J and get a drive cleaner.
If I have any further questions I know who to ask.
