nec writer on a go slow

hiya all - i have a nec 3500 writer it has up todate firmware on it - its usually fine but for some reason it wont burn above 2.2x it wont rip above 2.1x
it wont even verify above 2.4x - this is right out of the blue it happens with every type of disc ive tried and all else appears to be fine - its not the end of the world but its very irritating - im stumped - any suggestions gratefuly recieved
