Ok, When I bought these Verbs, I stocked up with four 50pks.
The discs I have been working with so far have had the PAPxxxx on the hub (first pak)
I decided to pop open another 50 pk, these have the PAPAxxxx on the hub.. and burned the same movie.

From what I understand, both would be CMC Verbs.

Just one burn on the Sony:

All's well with this new spindle...

I also learned an additional, funny lesson from all this as well.
When I first started burning from the +IDed Verbs spindle, I was getting all my failed burns on the BenQ 1655 and always successful burns from my Sony DRU-810. So I started suspecting that my BenQ was the problem and flashed the firmware from BCAB to BCIB. But of course, the failed burns continued to happen and ironically the Sony kept being successful. That's when I started noticing that the BenQ with the new BCIB firmware couldn't burn the +IDed Verbs at 12X, only at 4X. Funny thing was that when I burned 8X TYs, 16X regular(not inkjet printables) Verbs, and even Memorex (Ricoh-RO3) on that BenQ BCIB firmware, all the speeds were correct.

So when I just got these new PAPA IDed Verb printables, I burned with my BenQ and again it burned at only 4X when I requested 12X, BUT the burns were successful atleast. That's when I suspected that this BCIB firmware did not burn these printable 16X Verbs at the correct speed. I flashed to BCDB (because I did not have the option to flash back to the original BCAB) and now it burns at the 12X like it should.

Funny that the newest firmware for the BenQ 1655, BCIB cannot burn these InkJet Printable Verbs at the correct speed but it can on regular Verbs, TYs, and even the Memorex Ricohs???

BTW, when I looked back at the burn logs, I realized that the few successful burns on my BenQ with the BCAB firmware on the +IDed Verbs did in fact burn them at the requested 12X, so it was definitely the BCIB firmware that had the problem with the 16X Inkjet Printable Verbs. Go Figure??

So are these Verbs acceptable?, or should I take the whole bunch back?
To me, the second pak doesnt have the bunched up PIF patterns but overall they look worse.

I agree with jamoskeag3. Take them back because once you have it in your mind that you are not satisfied with them, you will never shake that feeling.

i personally like Maxell MIJ the best. i know pretty much everyone will disagree with me here, but i actually have TY third on my list (verbatim being second despite it's inconsistency).

i have heard too many bad stories of Taiyo Yuden media being poorly manufactured, ie, poor bonding, silver finish peeling off, and also the fact that it got disappointing results in a professionally done longevity test by dolphinius_rex at CDRLabs.com (DVD media only, CD-R's still seem to be good). just look at the CDRLabs.com forums to see some of the Taiyo Yuden horror stories.

and i've also said this before, that initial burn quality results mean squat when determining longevity and the actual quality of the media, as longevity tests have proved this theory wrong and there are other variables. Maxell MIJ media does rather well despite its mediocre initial burn quality. but it's nearly impossible to argue against Taiyo Yuden, the company that pioneered the CD-R technology and the name that most people consider the best media period. i too had Taiyo Yuden top of my list, but as i've heard more and more of these stories, i have to drop it down in my ranks.

don't mistake dolphinius_rex as being some kind of Taiyo Yuden hater; he was once one of the biggest promoters of TY media and he has a VERY unbiased opinion. he is known around the net as being one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to recordable media. some of the big name recordable media manufacturers come to HIM with questions.

also, don't get me wrong... i still like Taiyo Yuden media, but i just wouldnt trust any important data on them anymore (on their DVD's anyway).

do you have any scans of older burns on maxell media?

the oldest scans i have are only about a year old. i scanned this just now. the scan is mediocre, i know, but whats important is the results are pretty much the same as when i initially burned them (which is a good way to show how media degrades). i have some 1-year old TYG02, and the results are quite different compared to when i originally burned them, scanned with the same firmware/drive (still acceptable numbers, but it shows the change in only a years time).

i also like Maxell MIJ media because theyre very compatible, they have a high success rate and they are very consistent.
