I am pretty sure that's benq 1650

try some sony 16x dvd+r's and the verbatim same type

Recorder: PHILIPS DVDR1660P1, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: RITEKF - 1

welcome to the forum and congrats on getting a benq 1650, they gone now

everything is fine, it's just crap media and those phillips/benq's are picky

with good media the benq burns great at 8x and sometimes even 12x

Thanks for the welcome and remarks. I don't know anything about benq. Yes I am pretty sure it's the media which are bad. Still puzzled as to why the burner didn't recognize them (according to the media specific section of the nero log). Philips list of approved media for the burner does seem to be a pretty esoteric one, most of which I've never heard of. By the way, I need dvd-r for my player. Sony16d1 is on the list. I don't know yet if they are easy to come by.

see if you can bum a dvd+r and bitsett to dvd-rom, or have someone else
loan you a disk done that way and test on your standalone

btw nero did identify the blank's mid, that's what I quoted from your log, and that mid is well known and your burner/firmware very recent

benq and phillips are partners

Simple rule with media - use Verbatims or Taiyo Yudens. I think you're figuring that out jamtoday

how about cross flash to Benq 1650 then burn them at 8x?

agreed... i'd crossflash it to a DW1650 so youll be able to use BenQ firmware, as well as BenQ's utility called Qsuite where youll be able to overspeed and use BenQ's technology called Solidburn, which is great for media that is variable in quality.

many people find the Phillips firmware to be just as good as Benq, it's best to find premium media and test then only crossflash if needed. A lot of people go back to Phillips after using benq firmware.

i have not tried philips firmware with my DW1650 (sold it) nor have i with my DW1640, so i cannot comment. however, seems like a lot of people still like BenQ firmware on various messageboards i've seen (cdrlabs and cdreaks in particular).

also, i recommended BenQ firmware because of solidburn via BenQ's utility, Qsuite. it may help achieve better results with the media the OP is having problems with.

You're right that the log shows the burner identified the disc. I've just remembered what guide I was following. It's at digital-digest.com, and according to that a good burn should have something besides 0s in the media specific section of the log: that's at the end of #18 in the nero log I gave.
Anyway the proof is in the pudding, and a crap burn is a crap burn whatever the log says. I think for the time being I'll go back to the verbatim and just burn at 8x. At 16x it scarcely reaches that speed anyway, I think -- there's some smartburn feature which is supposed to stop it going too fast.

have you updated that firmware?

I would have installed the phillips as standalone master on the second ide,
you were slaved to an inferior drive that was running in pio mode and using in an older computer(maybe with weak power supply)?

If you flashed then reflash with drive hooked as I reccomended, from safe mode, no disks in drive, if not then at least test again, no multitasking, shut down all non essential processes and try a burn at 8X.

Make sure you change the cable and jumper and have the drive hooked to a power connector
all by itself and at the end of the ide cable

if it's good verfiy with scan disk

I never have Philip firmware for 1640 or 165- but the Benq 1620 firmware is way better then the philip

i know... im not a noob ;].

i still see A LOT of people still use BenQ firmware, including the senior members/mods etc. ive been a member of the cdfreaks/cdrlabs for a while now.
