Dual layer discs still at ridiculous prices! Why?

Have been putting off shelling out for a dual layer burner simply because the cost of the discs seems to never drop by much.Seems to me there is a monopoly by the disc manufacturers or is there a secret ritual that the companies must perform on each disc before they will burn in these drives?.......

All relative ..... How much should a gallon of gas cost ? ? ? Gas IMHO is WAY overpriced .....

I think Verbatim DL's at $1.75(US) is not to BAD !!!

    BTW: Only get Verb's

Not sure what you pay for 2 sl discs as opposed to a dl disc but where I come from the price is extremely skew-if.

        Varbatim DL

The cheapest Verbatim DLs I have found in stock here in the UK are £2 each (from Amazon dealer)
That's if you can find any.
Apparently there has been a rush on them for XBoxes for Christmas and 90% of UK suppliers have sold out.
To order from US to UK you have to set up a mailing address and the postal charges are fixed by the mail handler not the supplier.
Then there is the thorny subject of import duty/tax to pay.

All in all, a wasted opportunity for Verbatim to sell millions of disks!

        Regards

        Jimbo

That's partly why I bought it up.Dual layer burners have been out along time on the computer time frame & I cant see why making them after all this time should cost so much. You never said how much a reasonable qual S/L disc cost either.
p.s Could most of the manufacturers still have a Fort Knox size stock of leftover discs that have yet to dispose of & have quietly (unofficially) agreed to let it dwindle down abit more.Or more likely the movie companies realise, that it is much harder for the population at large to split or shrink movies than it is to easily fit them onto a single disc w/out effort?
p.s.s I dont think the disc manufacturers would want to take on the combined movie industry in a court court case, when they are still making a killing & it will be an inevitable switch sooner or later in their favour.

@bwatson105 - a couple of places have them reasonably priced here. Officeworks is not one of them (but occasionally they have good deals - I got a cake of 50 Verb 16x SLs last week for A$30).

I usually buy from a crowd called www.pcx.com.au who most times have pretty good pricing on stuff. But you're right, DLs haven't come down as much in price as we would have hoped - that is a function of size of production runs, expense of quality control etc.

"Out of stock" notify me. All the cheaper supplies have dried up in the UK! Plenty at £3+ each.
Still a few left at £2 on Amazon though!

glancing over this page and the reviews I would think the verbatim apple cart is being turned over

plus rumors that verbatim is getting ready to outsource it's dual layer like they have done with their single layer disks

expect to see made in tawain soon even on the verbatims
