HP dvd writer dc 4000

I hope some one can help me with a problem with my HP dvd writer dc 4000, I have used for about 1 year with no problems but recently I install the any DVD software and since then the writer would not read or burn any DVD it can read all kind of CD (music Data) but it just doesn't do anything when I insert a DVD. Some told that probabibly I will need to flash it, but I'm not sure what this means or how to do it. I'll appreciate any help.

firmware update is over 2 years old

could you give us some more details and specifics about what is not working with the drive?

It was working fine until some days ago, now it doesn't respond when I insert a DVD, basically it does nothing, it won't read, play or burn any type of DVD's, but it can read any kind of CD's, for the moment I haven't try to burn a CD but I'll try and let you know the results.
I have install the original software 2 times but the results are the same.
