Reflashing Burner with Diff Bios?

Own an LG GSA-4040b burner that has the massive velocity of 4x max + ram capable.Have read the codeguys site where they have made the 16x version of my burner capable of dual layer burning with a reflash.I'm not aiming for DL but,has anyone heard of, or been able to make the slower LG's faster with a new bios?
Need to upgrade my burner sooner or later but,DL still seems like a rort price wise for the discs!

firmware will not change a 4x lg dvd burner into an 8x or a 16x burner

'Tis a shame,when u look at the LG drives, they all have the same features,look the same as well.Why then I wonder that the 8x or 16x can be flashed to DL capability but not 4x.If anyone has done it,I would be interested to how it was done.
