There is some good firmware for this by Liggy and Dee.

Chewy would be best to tell you which firmware is best for you.

I have an NEC 3550A with Liggy and Dee's modded firmware, works excellent!
Chewy led me to that ages ago!

So your old burner was an LG with version 1.05 firmware. Now what is your current firmware for the NEC?

Do you still have that LG?

It is great for reading dirty/scratched discs that the NEC may have problems with occasionally.

go with dee's 1X7, original or region free, riplock is removed in all firmwares
but you can set dvdd to read slower but it's not a sure bet as nec's don't
                respond to the command well

Thanks Chewy, I wasn't sure of the best choice among those options.

                      houston we have a problem
rebecka said she has a 4550, her firmware she said she had was 184
This is the stock ND4551A firmware 1-84
                      the 4551 does labelscribe?

better to copy and paste the current burner and firmware from an imgburn window to avoid confusion please

                      now I am confused

I am going to blame it on Dan

I hope we don´t have a problem? Since I´ve already flashed the drive. Now imgburn says:

                        _NEC DVD_RW ND-4550A 1.X7 (ATA)

                        Before the flash it said:

                        _NEC DVD_RW ND-4550A 1.84

The 4551 does labelscribe, can the 4550 do that after the flash?

I did a burn after the flash @ 8x and the scan was like this:
                        Attached Files

the confusion was short lived, I saw your scan over in the scan thread,
that original firmware was not listed at liggy and dee's site

cdspeed verified you had a 4550 drive and now we know the 184 was also used for the 4550,

it is looking better for your new burner but those verbatim disks must be a bad batch

Can I be sure that it´s just a bad batch? I´ve had comments like - you´ve got too many programs running, you are burning too fast, you burn with the wrong program or not updated version etc. So I´ve tried several things - defrag, uninstalled all unwanted programs, unchecked all programs I don´t need to autorun, I´ve updated ImgBurn, tried burning reeeaaal slow etc. And now I even have a new burner and updated firmware... Is there anything else I can try or is the only thing to do to just buy new discs? Unfortunately I have at least 50 left...

That's not a really bad burn, trust me I can show you burns a lot worse than that from blank discs I have tried even Verbatims & they have still played. It's just that as you can tell from the disc quality scan thread there are better ones.

burn at 4x and scan at 8x and see how that does
