I thought that DVD-R was the most common (and most compatible) blank media but from some of the reading I've done on here, it appears that the experts on here are recommending using +R instead? Is this a correct assumption. My burner and recorder can take both. Just wanted a quick clarification. Thanks.
Avoid DVD-R?

I always use +r exclusively for bitsetting/booktyping to DVD-ROMNot registered Go here and click register to join the Digital Digest Forums

I use -R
I always go with -R since my Panasonic player will only play them or RAM. I have since stated using some +RW's as test DVD's and bitset or Booktype to ROM and my Panasonic player is fooled. Check your DVD players manual to start with, then learn how to book type/bitset.
I have never had a DVD-R fail to play on my machine or any other machine I tried to played them on. Using good quality -R's like Verbatim, Sony, Maxell japan if possible or Taiwan has never been a problem in my experience. These brands have all worked well for me. When in doubt go with Verbatim.
Like soup/chewy say it comes down to the advanced feature on book typing that I think blutach has in his signature a how to.Comment

All + type media (dvd5 & dvd9) has the advantage of changing to what is called DVD-ROM disk, bitsettings/booktype which makes it playable on almost all DVD players.
So if you have a very old player that plays only -media, with a change to
DVD-ROM disk and it will play on the old DVD player that used to play only
-media.
The only media I use now is DVD+R and DVD+R DL and due to slower speed not any +RW media, my stockpile of -media is almost used up and will not be replaced.

If you do go with -R, use Taiyo Yudens.
Formats have converged in DVD-5 in the last year or so. Players are a lot less picky than even 2 years back.
