    Burning speed

I´ve always thought that the slower the better burn. At least safer. So since I´ve had some trouble burning, this time I set the speed to 1x. And then I found this statement here at the forum:

"and often burn better at 8x and 12x than at 6x".

Can someone clear this out for me please?

With good media, burning at 4x is fine. I usually burn @8x and produce as good or better results.

I read that your burner doesn't particularly like 12x or 16x burns.

If you are looking for a general rule of thumb, it would be half the rated disc speed. So if you are burning 8X rated discs, then you would burn them @ 4X, etc. I generally burn @ 4X but once in a while I get adventurous.

Good point soup, the only other thing I would add is you might find media rated 1-8x, but your burner will offer burning up to 16x.

If you are comfortable burning @4x then do so, but 1x is a bit drastic.

I just made a 1x burn - and yes it was a bit drastic!

For now I use Verbatim 16x so with this new, and hopefully fully functioning, burner I should be able to burn @8x if I understand you all right. And stay away from 16x, unless I want to be adventurous!

You got it! I use the same media and always burn @8x with great results.

What you can do is download CdDvd Speed here & do a disc quality scan @ 4X & 8X then post the screenshots in this thread & you will get feedback on them. You can check the thread out first just to see what it is all about.

Edit: I forgot about this great link & this link.

I have the Swedish version of Nero CD-DVD Speed and tried to do a disc quality scan but I get this errortranslated from Swedish)

                "Error when test was initiated"

                Why is that?

It worked fine when I downloaded a new version. Problems though with the disc. Posted in the thread soup linked to. Thanks soup!
