    newer necs have no riplock and read fast, just prone to errors because of that

      Is that in Nero (I have but never use) and the CD/DVD Speed v4702.

      Open CD-DVD Speed>RunTest>Transfer Rate? Is that the path and what you mean? If so, a screenshot or is it a text report that would be helpful?

        I have a NEC 3550 in an older PC and it works like a champ, one of the better ones I've ever had.
        I have read some concerns with new NECs being Optiarc/Sony??

          This looks good for an already decrypted disc -
          DVDD log on this rip has a 4.4x average read. Other drives were much faster, though I don't have the log(s) on that.

          Did a test on another original disc with this Samsung and also the Plextor. Plex was 11+ minutes and this drive about 23 minutes using DVDD.

            Well, I got the Samsung updated to SH-S182D SB05. Looks like I will have to squeeze in some testing this weekend.

              @gs47

              there are way too many variables involved in ripping disks

              one might be a bear to read and make a particular drive look bad

                Me too, some comparison rips just to be sure.

                I did download Samsung's Magic Speed and changed the setting to the fast rather than the slow "silence" mode or whatever it is. Small utility with just a setting change/toggle is all it is.
                It does clearly state though that it will only change CD read speeds with no help on DVDs.

                  Thanks Chewy, I've only done 5 or 6 rips so far but they are ALL much slower than any other drive I've ever had - that is saying something and this is the newest drive with the highest specs I've ever had. Something is not quite right, I'm fairly darn sure...

                  At least this thread reminded you to update your firmware.
