DL failure with IB and LG_GSA-4163

Last night, I was trying to burn my first DL Verb with my LG-GSA-4163.

I got this error: Failed to write sectors 32-63

IB retried 20 times and then quit.

It asked me a question about aborting the burn??? or finalizing the disc?? and I hit OK. The last line in the log was about a memory failure in the drive and IB was unable to shut down the drive.

My computer froze . . . therefore no log. I had to hard reboot the computer. Process explorer or unlocker would not work.

My firmware is V 106 and is up to date.

What should I do next?? Try a Single layer burn?? retry a double layer?? reflash the drive??

To the MODS: I post this in the burning forum because I think it is my drive's fault NOT ImgBurn.

Need a log, but that is in the filesystem part of the disk. What are the MID code of the disk? Maybe a duff disk, or burning too quick?

I was burning at 2.4X. The lowest speed for the firmware on these discs.

gary, did you manually set booktype for dual layer in imgburn, I was under the impression it was automatic?

Last night when I checked, it was set DVD-ROM (but I am not sure if I checked the LG or the NEC).

Right now, (when I checked), it was set to normal for the LG?? So I reset it to DVD-ROM

I thought this version kept the setting for DVD+Rs for the LG???

with imgburn and your firmware

Thanks, I will do another this weekend and set the booktyping before starting the burn.

This version of ImgBurn sets the booktype automatically for LG writers.

As well, the booktype is not in those sectors - it is in the first sector of the leadin (top nibble of first byte actually).

Is there a full log please? It is in %appdata%/imgburn

Also, and Chewy would know more about this, are these the Verbs made by Moser Bauer in India?

after doing some reading some drives burn the MBI very well some horrible no real consistency like the Taiwan Discs

These discs came with the wrapper saying they were made in Singapore.

They are called silver in colour but have a definite purple (maybe pink) tinge to them. They are not like the MIT Verb 16X in silver colour.

On the inner ring before the start of the burn area, this is what I found:

On one side of the inner ring is this ID: Z00890-DVR-V850A
On the opposite side of this number is this number: 1107

When I set the booktype on main screen (icon lower right), it did not seem to take because when I selected Tools->Drive->Booktype it said it was not set. So I set it again and this time it held when I checked the lower right icon.

When I verified the DVD in ImgBurn, the second layer was VERY slow compared to the first layer. See it here in the DVDInfoPro graph: Reason is unknown.

I scanned with CD/DVD Speed:

The error from the first burn in this thread was probably from the booktype not being set (or kept).

When the 2 drives are compared at 2.4X speed, the NEC had 1047 PIFs while the LG had 2092. Almost twice as much for the LG. So I will probably use the NEC 3550 for DL burns as well. (Since the scanner is a NEC, I will ignore the PIEs)

Note of interest: I just re-opened ImgBurn and checked the booktyping on the LG. It has been kept even after closing and re-opening.

So it is probably user error....me!
