    what about VHS?

Is there any to use a computer to transfer commercial VHS to DVDs? I have tried a macro vision remover device and it didn't work. I have a sizeable collection of VHS that just isn't available on DVD.

A capture card and the MV remover should work. I use a LiteOn LVW-5005 standalone DVD Recorder to do my VHS to DVD transfers though. There is a MV hack for it that works flawlessly It is also good for backing up scratched DVDs that can't be done in the PC because if it plays the LVW-5005 records it.
Comes in handy for recording stuff of the cable box/TV also. I picked one up recently for $59.00 after getting $30 credit for getting a sites credit card.

Many digital camcorders also can do the job. You plug your vhs's analog output into the camera's analog input and then the camera will 'digitise' the content. I've done this successfully with many tapes.
