Lite-On rips fine, but errors at the start of Burn Process

I'm guessing this is some kind of software issue as opposed to hardware, but I really don't know.

I've made many a backup with my current setup (hardware/software/media), and it just recently started giving me this problem. I have made no known changes to the way that anything involved in the backup process is configured.

it spits out the tray and asks for a blank media. Insert blank disc, and nero starts the burn process. Its gets through the initial couple quick steps and then gives me an error as soon as it tries to start the actually writing process. Here is the error message I get:

Like Chewy said you have an old stock firmware and a lot of new media/codes are out. If ya don't mind tinkering with your existing firmware you can try MediaCodeSpeed Edit by ala42 and add it to your existing firmware but the csot Chewy linked to is more up to date and has more media codes in it.

OK, I'll check into this. What made it just start to do this out of nowhere? I didn't change any variables when the errors started to occur. I've used over a full spindle of this media without problem.

Do I want the csot - stock or one of the patched ones that is in the link you provided?

this media might change frrom spindle to spindle, same brand 16x dvd+r, that's a new mid code RITEK -P16, your firmware does not support them

even they are not that good, especially with such an old burnewr, maybe it's dying but we need to get the firmware to update first before assuming that

personnally I would retire that burner

why waste time and money when a better new one is so cheap

Thanks for singling out that firmware link. I'll try it and see what happens.

If it's just a firmware problem, I guess I would say...why waste money on buying a new burner if this one still makes backups just as well.

What's better about a new one that makes it worth me spending money on a new drive if this one just needs a firmware update?

Here's my logic, the first dvd burner I bought was a pioneer 105, refurbished for 150$, burned maybe 200-250 disks, they dropped in price to 100$ in a few months, it only burned dvd-r's at 4x and never did a very good job, when the nec 3520's got down to $50 I sold the pioneer for 20$ and got 2 of the nec's, they burned dvd+r's and did a better job with + or - media.

Your 1213>1653 was one of the first liteon's that was an ok burner imo. Later models
do a better job. Speed is not important, quality burns are. By all means keep the burner if you can get it to work and it's making good burns.

That firmware update worked perfectly. Downloaded, installed, restart computer, backup worked flawlessly.

Appreciate the links to newer burners as well. I'm going to be building a new rig here very soon, I'll go with the Samsung you linked to.

Congratulations, many are too scared to do the crossflash, it's really a piece of cake and with an old burner that won't burn new media, there's no many alternatives.

There must be some kind of possible ramifications that I was not aware of before installing???

It was literally as simple as download file, run .exe file from the .rar, restart computer. That was it. What am I missing here that people are scared to attempt?

A bad firmware flash can ruin a drive and crossflashing will void warranties in some cases, thus the reluctance of some to make an attempt.
