and now a single layer disc!! help!!

I just tried a single layer disc and now it failed too. Has my burner just crapped the bed??

I am hesitant to blame this on nero, couild possibly be that old dell dvd burner, the fact that it did single layer doesn't prove anything

as a test let's use imgburn to burn a single layer at 8X speed and verify and post a log

if you are set on using dual layer then I would update the firmware from safe mode and use imgburn for dual layers

to use nero for single layer you would probably have to run their clean tool and reinstall

I really think it may be the drive...

I have heard from plenty that Nero7 is not the way to go. However I just don't understand how I could have done SO many burns so far with NO problems whatsoever. And then all of a sudden I run into trouble? That doesn't make any sense? I didn't start using different discs or anything.

Here's the latest though. Now the burner won't even acknowledge that there is any media present in the drive. With Nero or ImgBurn. Then I just ran disc identifier and got the following log.

When I put a disc in the drive it spools up for a sec then stops then again and then stops, like 5 or 6 times. Then each program tells me that I don't have a disc inserted. Now the question is should I go ahead and try the updates you suggested or should I call Dell and have them come out and install a new drive? (I am still under warranty w/ next day at home service)

before you call dell post a filter driver load from imgburn, maybe something's running we didn't see with nero?

usually drives are more consistent, they burn reliably or not, if you are using good media

ask for a new samsung burner

dell might ask you to do a clean install of your computer, all I would reccomend was removing all those filter drivers except for the native xp ones and then rebooting

reload the sonic crap later if you have to have it, I wouldn't let it in the same room with my computers

the imap and redbook are the good guys, the rest are sonic crud that's most likely corrupt

your burner was a prequel to the nec 3500 which was considered to be one of the best
single layer dvd-r burners ever made

I just went to my installed programs page and removed everything that is definitely not necessary or used any more including everything I could find with sonic on it. I still see some in the log below. Any ideas on how to get rid of it?

Okay I think I got rid of the right driver

I went and found the sonic driver and deleted it. I am going to try another burn. I will let you know how it goes.

well... I still think it is the drive itself

well... I still think it is the drive itself. After I removed all the other drivers and rebooted. I was able to burn one single layer disc with Nero. The log is below. But now when I try to do a second. The drive just won't acknowledge that there is even a disc in the drive. Not with Nero, not with Imgburn, not with DVD identifier. I am going to call Dell this evening and see what they say.
