Thanks for the help Chewy, sorry if I wasted any of your time by not checking things out properly first.....ill do a better job of that in the future.

that's ok, glad to see you found that link, I bookmarked it about a year and a half ago

seen that mistake a lot where someone checks dma and misses the optical drive being in pio mode

this thread was a good one, maybe it will help others

the icing on the cake would be to run down what's kicking it out of dma and into pio mode?

Are there any bios settings for dma, have you been using cable select and old 40 conductor cables?

        You do have sp2 installed?

I do have sp2 installed.....and yes Ive always been on a 40 conductor cable.....ill have to check the bios settings. cable select..hmmmm, been a long time since ive thought about that at all....not sure where to check.

whats really odd is that it was doing this the other day, when i first started the thread, and i did some firmware things and such, but no resetting of the dma, and the problem went away.( I should say that i was able to burn a few iso's with no problems with the buffers), then the problem came back. I did try and read a scratched dvd in one of my drives just b4 the issue started, and when it reappeared, but ive done that b4 with no problems.

Ive been using the 40 conductor cable with my 160p6s drive and with my hp940i crossflashed drive for almost a year now....ive posted many scans and have had really good burns without this problem occuring. I was thinking maybe flashing to the new firmware (upgrading my hp drive to the lite-on 20a1h drive) might have been the cause, but the problem happened for the first time when it was still a 18a1h drive. Both drives in my system are almost a year old.
Im thinking severely scratched disk might be the culprit, dunno
I will definately get a new 80 conductor cable though
