That's a really old burner. Here's a link to a great firmware site, good luck.

If you read at the bottom of the page you will see why I never reccomend some to update that drive

a good test of the drive is see if it will you can boot with it?

Your drive may just need cleaning or be dying, I would hold off on the firmware

If it still doesn't work after cleaning and you are ready to buy a new one(expensive and a pain to find the right replacement) then and only then would I suggest trying the firmware

you need to read some and search

well it cant be dying. because it reads every CD. all of 'em. and also it read a dvd I burned yesterday 5 minutes ago. now it won't. its weird. may be I need to clean it. so, that firmware thing is some kinda dangerous right? not like any update thing. well, in that case, I'm gonna give that cleaning job a try. if nothing good happens, then I'll take it to a service.

that drive was one of the few good slimlines ever made, many of the others are just crap

I have never heard of problems with reading caused by firmware for it?

Plenty of people have ruined those drives by using the wrong firmware, that why Liggy wrote the warnings so explicitly.

If it reads cd's but still not dvd's consistently then I would just save it for critical uses like reloading the operating system, people wear their drives out by using them too much.

Those drives can be configured master or slave, this is done at the factory with firmware, you could order a replacement drive and it not work because of this issue.

Many smaller service places aren't even qualified or competent enough to know this.

My standard reccomendation is start using a good external drive and save that one.
