Burning Issues w/ HP DVD Writer 840b HI86

Hello all. I've had a run of bad luck over the past month when trying to burn with the HP DVD Writer 840b HI86 on my pc. I went through a 50 pack spindle of Verbatim discs, creating at least 20 coasters-the highest I've ever had from a single package. I chalked it up to a bum spindle, as I was also using Office Depot -RWs with no problems. So I bought another batch of Verbs, this time in the newer blue/orange package-the other were in the old white and blue label. So far only 3 of those have turned out coasters. But now, my OD -RWs are running into errors when burning. 4 in a row have resulted in errors. Here is the latest log which I got today...

So, I'm trying to figure out whether this is a hardware problem, of a bad media problem. I've adjusted burn speeds in Imgburn, and under the drive icon in My Computer. It's really fraying my nerves. One coaster after another.
The last thing I need is a big bill to replace the writer in this thing.

Thanks for any advice that's offered.

it may or may not help, use everest to verify that your voltage rails are fine and you might even try reformatting the rw's, that's a full erase that takes 15 minutes at 4x

I am sure you are perfectly capable of putting a new drive in yourself

Thanks, I'll download that right away. Odd that this update wasn't on the list of updates I saw when I visited HP Customer Care.

      System Requirements

      # You must be logged on to the system as an administrator to install this update.
      # DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 840b.
      # Blank floppy diskette or blank recordable CD (CD-R).
Don't have a blank cd-r...would using a dvd work (to make a data disc), or should I just wait till tomorrow when I can get out and buy a pack?

I am sure you are perfectly capable of putting a new drive in yourself
Shudders at the thought of cracking open the tower, and fiddling with all the wires...

I've been stuck at home, and unable to get out to a store to buy some cd-rs. And even if I got some, how would I get the HP file on disc, when the burner is acting wonky as it has? My pc didn't come with floppy drive, which is an idiotic move by manufacturers of newer machines.
I think I read something about burning the file as a folder and running it from the hdd. But how would I do that? Is there an option to create it as a hdd folder instead of crating a cd-r?

          And the headaches continue...

I used winrar to crack that hp exe and even then I couldn't get anything usable out of it

it's gonna have to be run from dos

find another computer download and extract and burn the cd with it

or do what I would do, get another drive and bush that old one

I've had the sinking feeling that that's what I'm gonna have to do..I just didn't want to admit it. Had my eyes on a new set top dvd recorder with digital tuner when the tax refund came, now there goes the money, before I even get it. .

2 weeks later. An update on my progress-or lack thereof...

It took this long to get the firmware update on a cd. The first week, my sister came over and took me to her house. There I downloaded the file, and opened it in order to get to the ISO file. Screeech. My sis' pc has a Samsung writer, and the firmware file wouldn't complete the cycle to unload the ISO file on the drive because it detected it wasn't compatible-ie, not an HP drive. Dejected, I was forced to wait another week to try again-she lives too far away to have driven me back to her place after the 1st attempt.
So now forewarned, I sent the ISO to myself in an email, and d/led it that way, to get it burned to a cd. Return home and follow the instructions-insert cd in drive, and reboot, and follow the instructions.
                Wait for it...

                Nothing happened.

It didn't update the firmware. Nothing, no instructions came up onscreen after rebooting.

The hopeful, optimist in me is still wanting to put the blame on consecutive batches of bad media-I forgot to mention a pack of CMC Maxell's exhibited to same problem before buying the Verbs. So having time to waste (or burn..ha), I took the 100 pack of Verbs and split them in half, sequestering the top half in a separate container and decided to try a few from the middle of the spindle. I successfully made 6 burns. Tried 1 from the original top of the spindle, and another fail.

Here's the Imgburn logs from both a success and failed burning.

So, now Ill blow more money getting another packag of blanks-this time, I'll go for some Sonys. If the same thing happens, I'll know for sure it's the burner and not the discs.

Unless I turn into Badluck Schep-Rock, and pick a bad pack of Sonys too...
