Slow burning With any dvd related Program

I am not too sure what the problem is since about a week ago, my dvd drives and burners worked just fine, 15 mins to burn a dvd. Now, it is taking about 145 mins to burn! I am not too sure what caused this little glitch. I have researched time and again to see what the problem is but since I am not familiar with how to check the problem, that leaves me at a loss.

When I look at the properties of the actual drive, it is saying that the drive works properly. Basically, I want to know how to fix the burning to go from really slow back to my normal speed. The drive can read dvds fine but cant burn them, well they can but it takes a very long time to do so.

I am using Philips External SPD3100
My computer is running Windows XP, version 2, SP 3

Any other information that is required, just let me know!

Checked the DMA settings and all is good there. They are the right ones. All the drives, are maybe 3 or 4 years old. If its not the DMA settings, I wonder what it is?

I burnt a regular data cd and it took 7 mins and normally it will take max 3 mins. The files on the cd that I burnt arent that big. I have burnt larger files onto a cd and it has taken a max 3 mins.

Wow that is an older drive.

Your firmware is two versions behind. There are people here that know these logs a little better than I. Just be patient.

A firmware update would not hurt.

Thank you so much! I have no idea how to read those logs or even what the heck they mean cept for the fact that they are logs about. If I click on the link, do I download those drivers?

Hmmm, the thing I notice in the log it says "determine max speed: FALSE" so maybe that setting got toggled? Try setting the burn speed to maximum.

Also are you burning audio CDs? If not, it's usually better to do DAO or Disc At Once mode rather than Track At Once... but that shouldn't slow it down that much. I have a hunch the Maximum speed got switched off.

Also with Nero, at least 6.x that I had, I noticed if you put in a bad disc while it was running the registry settings got all hosed. I always inserted the disc and waited for it to stop accessing before bringing up Nero. If I didn't I would have been doing a reinstall every 2 weeks.

Hi amanda8308,

You would download DL13 and save it. I save mine to desktop. Reboot your computer in safe mode with the drive connected. Make sure that your drive is empty.

Open the DL13 file and let it update your drive. Do not power off or interrupt the update. Just follow the instructions.

This will update your drive (At least three years back) to the newest firmware available, but not following instructions can also ruin it as well.

Also make sure you are using quality DVD's when you do your burns. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are super.

When I do bios updates I make sure that I have the drive and or computer connected to a UPS. Any power glitch will trash the update and corrupts the bios, and render the drive inoperative.

I found an online manual. Looks like that "determine maximum speed" is just a test to see if the hardware can handle the burning speed. Anyway, I always used Nero Burning ROM. The Burn Tab should have a drop down list where you can select the burning speed. Also I think it has a choice for DAO or TAO. If you find it try selecting the highest speed your media is rated for and DAO.

If you are using the same media that worked before I would try all the other settings before updating the firmware. There's always a small chance you can get bad code that turns your hardware into dead weight. Happened to me with an external modem. If you have good reason to update that's fine, but if all factors are the same and the performance is reduced chances are that's not going to fix it by itself.

If you are using different media, then that's another story. Basic diagnostics is, divide and conquer(IOW, try to determine if it's hardware or software) and, only change one thing at a time. If that one thing doesn't work, you can undo it. Only one variable in the equation, if you get what I mean. As soon as you have to changes, you have no way to know what did which when.

Just try to track it down step by step.

Thank you all for your very much important posts! Hopefully that will work and my burners will be good to go! Another question is my laptop, it burns at a VERY painful pace as well, I was told that my usb ports arent up to speed? How do I get them up to speed?
