Communication error

I just bought and installed two new SATA Sony Optiarc DVD burners and am trying to backup one of my DVDs (unencrypted). Using a program that must not be named, I got as far as burning and then got this error message: Communication error. I went to the folder where the files were to be backed up and nothing was there. Huh? I have now ruined three blanks, trying this and that.

Could it be that my copy of Nero is antiquated? It's legit, but at least three years old.

I have downloaded Imgburn and while I'm waiting for an answer, will be (probably) ruining another blank.

That was interesting

I think there might have been files in the folder on my desktop -- it's just that Windows apparently doesn't see them.

I downloaded Imgburn and successfully saved an image of the DVD to the desktop folder. All went well until I tried burn the file to disc. Apparently the file is too large to burn on a single-layer disc.

Is there a way to shrink the file? Or must I buy dual-layer discs? Will the new drives I got burn dual-layer discs? Must check online -- they didn't come with any info, being Newegg OEM hardware.
