do dvd software work with all hardware dvds?

I recently formatted my computer, and it has a Toshiba DVD-ROM. I remember that it had Zoran SoftDVD software which was used to play DVDs. I was wondering if I would have to obtain the same software for this DVD player, or can I just get any DVD software and will it work the same? thanks!

You should be able to make do with any other DVD player softwares, and PowerDVD and WinDVD come foremost as my recommendations.
