Which is the better DVD Writer?

I have the option of one of 2 DVD writers to be installed in my PC. 1 is a Philips DVD+RW-D28, the other is a NEC ND-1100A - which purports to be multi-format at up to 4x speed.

Any idea which is the better drive, regarding overall compatibility etc, etc? (I have not got a clue!)

the dvd+r is currently the most compatible dvd format for use in standalone dvd players and pc's.. I have known NEC drives to have problems, and would recommend the Phillips.

I object, your honor!

Without a shadow of a doubt, Sony DRU-500A. Same price as the rest, records DVD-R (4x), DVD-RW (4x), DVD+R (4x with firmware 1.0f), DVD+RW (2.4x), CD-R (40x) and CD-RW (dunno what "x" it writes these at ) and is SONY. Software isn't as branded as the others (but the Good Lord invented the internet and warez sites for something ), but equally as valid for it's purpose.

And since no one really knows who's gonna win Format Wars, get a DualRW drive like the DRU-500A and just use any format you wish.

So, your honor, I rest my case

I have to say normally I'd agree, mostly everything electrical I own is sony, unfortunately I only had the choice of the two in my original post!

Given the chance though.....

actually if i had a choice i would have gone with a sony two but if you only had the choice of two..

I stand by my decision of the phillips.

How's that drive working out for you?

Well, in the end both drives were chosen... I went for one, and my brother for the other!!

They have not had a great deal of use as of yet, as I am having some problems with the video editting software, and the manufacturers seem clueless as to what's happening - they think in theory it should be working fine?!

The use they have had, I can't really say there is much to choose between them! Both have done everything asked of them, with no errors found yet.

I wait to see which one develops a problem first!
