Can i make backups without a dvdr/rw drive???

Well ive read thousands of posts on this issue and im new to all this and it is very counfusing indeed, what im wondering is since dvd players play cdr/rw's and cd's with videos on them why can they not play a cdr/rw with a movie on it?? Also can i make a copy of a dvd that will play in my dvd player with a cdr/rw burner?? And is there a program the will just simply copy my dvd exactly as it is then put it on to cd with having to modify video/audio formats with easy?? I have not tried anything as of yet however i have read very much about all of this and i just dont understand alot of it there is too many formats i cant keep em all strait, lol such as, avi,mpeg-1-2-3-4,amp,xvid,divx,cdo,vob, just too many, lol any ideas??? Also i have explored many of the software titles discussed in these forums and many others downlaoded several only tried one or two but they do not seem to come with very many help menue items either, or they dont explain what all of the options are for or what those options do either??

Thanks in advance for any replies or assistance!!

Yes....but it won't exactly be a "1:1 copy" as you would copy a normal cd-rom. You must have a dvd burner to do a dvd copy, and you must have a dvd-rom reader to make a Video CD which will play in your dvd player.
