    playback on remote computer

How can i playback a dvd on one computer while the dvd drive is located on antoher computer in my home network? i know i can rip the dvd to a file and transfer that for viewing, but i thought it would be possible to view directly from the drive on the remote computer as well. Any suggestions?
    PS. i use Win98

    u can do that

Windows 98 was not designed to be an advanced network os but you can do that. all you would need to do is place the dvd into the drive of the computer u want to use, MAKE SURE THAT DVD IS NTO IN USE ON THE REMOTE COMPUTER OR THE HOST COMPUTER, then from there you would need rights to go into the persons computer, if you have that then your next step would be to goto the HOST comnputers harddrive then you would tell the person at the other end to put the windows media player file on the share to the network, so basically they would copy windows media player to the network folder and make it a share once that is done you should be ableto start windows media player on their computer run whatever media is in that coimputer and watch whatever dvd or listen to whatever cd is in there.

So the steps are 1. tell them to put the windos media player icon into their share folder

    2. put media in computer make sure not on or being used

    3. make sure u are allowed to view their network posted files

    4. double click windows media player out of the network folder on thier machine and then open media player and try to view the file from the menu

    good luck

Unfortunately Windows Mediaplayer cannot play DvD's as far as I can see. I use PowerDvD, but that hangs up when I try this on the remote computer

windows media player in 2000 has full playback capability

maybe you should try another program then, u should be able to get the same results unc into htat persons computer run it from their computer and it should be broadcast to the network.

WMP needs an external, supported decoder in order to play DVD's. The function won't be displayed unless Windows detects one. Trying looking at the Microsoft Knowledge Base for details.

              Good Luck!
