DVD Rom and CD-RW help

I'm running a DVD ROM (I'm not sure of the brand at the moment) with a HP 9700 series CD-RW. I have them both set on IDE 2 and I'm trying to get away with running them on the same ribbion cable because I've run out of pins on my motherboard. I've tried every combination of jumper settings I can think of and I still get blue screens and lockups.

Any thoughts?

The only combination you should have is master slave with the first drive on the ribbon being master and the second being slave. that should help. that should be the only combination that u have to use.
