Are you getting any sound from VCDs, music Cds, etc. played from the DVD drive?

yeh i get sound from everything (including WinDVD 3.1) from the DVD drive. It's just PowerDVD that doesn't want to output DVD audio :|

Since you indicate that WinDVD operates properly, it's obviously not a soundcard driver problem.

Although I'm not personally familiar with PowerDVD (I use WinDVD exclusively), I'd suggest that there's either a conflict with WinDVD (you might try temporarily uninstalling WinDVD, rebooting, and then trying PowerDVD) or, possibly an incorrect setting in your PowerDVD setup.

I realize that I've not provided you with absolutely specific information to rectify your problem, but perhaps it will have helped steer you in the right direction...

I've got the same problem with PowerDVD 4.0 (demo).
No sound at all, though I tried all kinds of settings.

WinDVD (demo) doesn't have a problem with this, so it can't be a hardwareproblem.

          All tips, are welcome..

          Cheers,

          Lievn

          PS:
I've got an AMD Atlon 1.4Ghz on an Iwill k266 motherboard,Matrox G400, Creative Live! sound card and Win Xp running.

Try setting the hardware accellerator option under Control Panel/Multimedia/Playback Device/Advanced/Performance (dont ya love multiple windows and tabs? ) to a lower setting.
I use Win98SE, SBLive! Plat and all audio works fine EXCEPT 4-channel audio playback. For some reason, PowerDVD4 didn't want to playback audio files in 4-channel mode till I lowered the hardware accellerator, although DVD movies played back fine.

hi, do you use SPDIF out on your PowerDVD?

When you play a DVD with AC3, is there anything show up in "Audio information" in the configuration box (i.e. where it tells you are using YUV overlay). Normally it should say somthing including "AC3", ?? channels... etc

If SP2 is installed, the WAVEFORMATEX should be there and playing a non-PCM stream should be ok. I am suspecting it is PowerDVD XP 4.0 which has a bug on Win2000.

              Any idea?

It seems to me its a bug in PowerDVD4.

                I use Win98SE, with a SBLive! Platinum card (not 5.1), and DirectX8.1

I noticed under DxDiag in the Sound tab, you can move the sound accelaration through 4 posistions. The first posistion is Emulation mode. Second is Basic Hardware mode with no Hardware sound buffers. Third is Standard Hardware Accelaration with Hardware buffers. And fourth is Full Accelaration with Hard buffers.

In PowerDVD4, reading anything off of my DVD-Rom drive or CD drive, it will work properly, wether its a real CD, DVD movie, MP3 files on CD, etc. I will get Dolby Pro Logic II mode working correctly with any stereo source being read from DVD or CD with Full Accelaration.

However, if I try to play a file from one of my hard drives, no matter what the file is, PowerDVD4 will not playback the audio (and usually crash or freeze) unless the accelaration is in Emulation or Basic mode (only software buffers). But, I will not get Dolby Pro Logic II or any other multi-speaker sound enhancements. It will just play the same stereo (or mono) sound from both the front and rear speakers.

If I use the update to PowerDVD4, it will just crash my whole system instead of just itself.
