What format disk to use for DVD playback?

I just purchased a Sony DRU-510A because it claims to write disks in the DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW & DVD+RW formats. Question is: which type of disk will play on my Hitachi Set-top DVD player? I've called Hitachi and they said it will not read any of these formats. I find that hard to believe, especially since they also told me it will not read VCD (video CD) and I have successfully played these on it.

Does anyone know whick type of disk would most likely work or do I have to try each type?
