Jumpy playback help needed

Hi, I'm running on a hp 783c with windows xp 512 of ram with a 64mb video card. I'm not having a problem playing dvds that I never had before. When I try to play them they're all jumpy. I've tried several different dvds in several different programs. I've looked everywhere. I've updated drivers, checked dma, ect. to no luck. For some reason this also happened on my other computer too which used to work fine as well. The only thing I can think of is some codecs I downloaded may have caused problems. Does anyone have any ideas?

1) Have you tried playing these DVDs on a standalone player, to make certain the problem isn't related to the physical DVDs?

2) Have you run a DVD/CD cleaning disk on your DVD drive/burner? Maxell makes one that retails for approximately $10 US
