Have you enabled DMA for both your DVD drive and hard drive(s)?

alright i have enabled the dma for hdd as well as the DVD ROM but the problem still remains,

What does it mean it could be my video card?

does that mean i have to change my video card? how can i confirm it is problem with my vga? what if i change my video card and the problem still persists? what will i do then?

8Mb is barely enough these days for games, video etc... Try to disable all other background processes. I'm merely suggesting that your graphics card is not powerful enough... it could be a combination of other factors. You could change your card anyway... treat it as a form of upgrade.

DVD playback is not the same with 3D rendering, thus the reference to 8MB of memory is irrelevant. What is more likely is that the video adapter does not to possess hardware MPEG-2 decoding capabilities, thus all DVD decoding burdens are offloaded to the (admittedly) slow CPU. This logically results in bad DVD performance.

I would suggest that you get yourself a new budget (no point spending much on an old system) video card for the system, one that has hardware MPEG-2 decoding capabilities. As far as I am aware, all ATI cards possess them.

hey thank u guys but i think i have fixed the problem.

i dont know how or what i did but the playback is smooth now.

what i do notice is that performance is enhanced in 16 - bit color depth rather than the 32-bit i was using earlier. but now its playing good in 32-bit as well but at 16-bit and 800*600 resolution it plays real smooth.

thank u guys again for ur replies.

I am currently using PowerDVD XP that came bundled with my DVD-ROM drive.

If u go to the configuration inside the program, u will see "Hardware Acceleration" is enabled or checked.

                    Uncheck it.

Then close the configuration window and close PowerDVD and restart is all over again.

Again go to the "Hardware Acceleration" and check the box.

Then try playing the DVD. it should play smooth.

I think thats what i did.

                        also try this

Also I noticed that the problem was there as long as i had my screen color depth at 32-bit or 24-bit.

when i set it to 16-bit, the playback is smooth.
