    DVD Sizes

What's the size of a standard DVD-R? A typical DVD-R - I was thinking 4.7 GB, correct? Unless there are various little size differences that I was not aware of.

But 4.7 GB converts to about 4800 MB of data - that's what I found out on an online conversion thing. But when I was burning a disc of anime, I was only able to fit a little under 4500 MB. If I go over it will say there's not enough space. What happened to the other 300 MB?

Actually, as you and I understand "Gigabytes", a blank DVD-R can hold 4.37 Gigabytes (A Gigabyte being 1,024 bytes x1,024 x1,024).

But in the strange world of the DVD, a "gigabyte" is 1,000 bytes x 1,000 x 1,000 - hence 4,700,000,000 bytes is referred to as "4.7 gigabytes".

    4,700,000,000 divided by (1,024x1,024x1,024) =4,370,000,000 or 4.37 "True" Gigabytes...
