well nothing really is direct but you can with some guides. i suggest you look at some first before you attempt anything else.
i use a series of programs to get what i want. i recommend using dvd shrink to get the vob files off the dvd first. Then used dvd2avi to extract the audio as ac3 audio out. it will look as a wav but much smaller. some audio files when extracted from video editing programs with have the .wav extention. but you should be able to tell the differece when you try to play it and the file size. the ac3 files .wav will only play in windows media player, the old one.

I used nandub for all my conversions to divx, if thats what you planned to do. though you should know that ac3 is audio compressioned audio that's 5 channels. its not as compacted as a wma or mp3 for that matter. as far as good audio goes. the best to save space and quality is wma. ogg is another format that you should look at. its kind of compression with the least amout of error. i thought it was lossless but its not. the only file audio compression thats lossless is Flac and thats a bad ratio of i think 1 to 5 or worse. you should also have VFAPI reader and converter. this is a good way to get you d2v file that you get from dvd2avi into nandub or virtual dub without the hassle of encoding it one time first already.

    hope that helps

    so programs to get

DVD Decrypter- best ripper that there is
smartripper - good ripper to but it has more trouble then Decrypter to get passed hard errors.

Nemo service pack - to get ac3s to play in windows media player
    get the light version.

dvd2avi - makes project files thats needed in programs like tmpg

VFAPI reader - to read a virtual avi file straight from the vobs you get off the dvd. note you need dvd2avi first, note also that there might be a version with vfapi built into dvd2avi.

virtual dub- most popular program that lets you encode video in any codec you have on you pc.

nandub - hack of virtual dub that lets you have 2 pass encoding for best results. i recommend this cause it used the old divx 3.11 alpha code thats way better to me then the new divx hands down. compare results and you can tell that the old one is blurry.
filters to get best results on in nandub is first deinterlace, then resize it to dimentions that result in resolutions that divide into i think 16 for the high and 32 for the with. though it might be the other way around. if you dont do this some files in windows xp will be turned upside down. not sure why but its a flaw.

DVD Shrink - in the dvd section of downloads
Audiograbber for encoding the ac3 down to something like wma or mp3 outside of nandub, just incase theres a sink error or you messed it when you encoded with the video.

Cool edit - is another good thing to have to edit the audio when you get it to a real Wav intel pcm form.

You can find all these in www.digital-digest.com under software.
look under divx and look under dvd-r
dvd shrink i think is only listed under dvd-r forums.
