COnverting AVI/MPEG into DVD ready files for Nero

Great site! Loads of smart ones here...

I was curious about what software people had to recommend for converting AVI/MPG into the files you need to put in Nero's Video_TS folder?

I've been reading tutorials on such things and it seems that it's quite a process. It usually involves six pieces of software all doing different jobs. If that's the only way, that's the only way I guess...

Does anyone know of any ALL-IN-ONE software that is useful for converting and ripping? Also, I've been reading quite a bit on the necessity to convert the audio into 48khz. Then I read another that says the audio needs to be converted into AC3... Bla bla bla....

So, my question is, what is the quickest and easiest way to prep an AVI/Mpg for burning so it can be read on most/all DVD players?

One set of procedures (other posters may/probably will suggest alternative methods) would be:

    1) Use "TMPGEnc" to convert the .AVI (DivX-compressed or otherwise) to compliant MPEG2-for-DVD format - Use "TMPGEnc's" DVD wizard/template to accomplish this

    2) Use "TMPGEnc DVD Author" (a different program than "TMPGEnc) to easily create the required additional DVD files and structure (and chapters and a menu, if you wish)

**If the combined filesize of the DVD "package" written to your hard drive is greater than 4.37Gb, use DVD Shrink (or similar) to compress

If your O/S is either Win2000 or WinXP, TMPGEnc DVD Author can also burn your DVD. Otherwise, use NERO to burn in "DVD-Video" mode
(As an alternative to "TMPGEnc DVD Author", you could use "DVDLab")

    Let us know of your success ;>}

I'll give it a try... Here's another one for ya...

What do I do if I want to put several AVI files onto one DVD? How would I go about this? Assuming that the total memory of the compressed files is less than 4.37Gb.

Thanks for the quick reply Setarip, I'll post my results soon.

          I tried it...

          Hello again,

I followed your instructions and burnt a DVD. However, the DVD only runs on my computer's DVD ROM. I have a Toshiba DVD player and a Sony PS2, neither of which will run it.

          Any ideas?

          Todd.

            1) What format have you burned - DVD-R or DVD+R?

            2) Do you know, for a fact, that your Toshiba is capable of playing BURNED DVDs? If so, DVD+R or DVD-R?

              No Audio

              Well,

I bought a nice new Panasonic to run the DVD I made, and it runs great...If you like silent movies..

Any ideas why there's no audio track?

              Todd.

                  1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub (or any of its variants) or NanDub

                  2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

                  3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

The audiostream is probably in either .AC3 format or Variable Bitrate MPEG Layer 3 (VBR .MP3).

If it proves to be .AC3:

In TMPGEnc, under the "Environmental Settings" "VFAPI plugin" tab rightclick on the "Direct Show Multimedia Reader" and increase to the highest priority. This will enable TMPGEnc to accept a properly encoded .AVI with .AC3 audio for input...

If it proves to be VBR:

Simply use VirtualDubMOD (Different than standard VirtualDub), to save the audio stream as an Uncompressed PCM (WAV) file as follows:
Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

                  1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

                  2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

                  3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

                  4) Save with a new filename

                    File Info.

I got an error message when I tried to load the AVI. I put that in the pic, as well as the file info you requested...

                    The info is attached,
                    Thanks,
                    Todd.

                      1) It appears that you need to download and install an .MP3 audio codec ("Unknown tag 0055" is indicative of an .MP3 audiostream) - Then reboot.

                      2) Follow my previous instructions starting with, "If it proves to be VBR" (Make certain that you use VirtualDubMOD and NOT the standard VirtualDub)...

                        How's this?

Ahhh, I didn't know where to find an MP3 codec, so I just grabbed a bunch of codec packs, and the File now seems to be labeled.

If this isn't what you're looking for, could you direct me to a site that's good for getting codecs?

The new File Info is attached...

                          Now you're ready to:

Follow my previous instructions starting with, "If it proves to be VBR" (Make certain that you use VirtualDubMOD and NOT the standard VirtualDub)...

                            So, I....

                            So I'm supposed to,

                            4) Save with a new filename

Then I burn it to a DVD???

No, for goodness' sake! Then, just as you did before:
